UPI scam: how to get your money back
If you've sent money to a UPI scammer, the first few hours decide almost everything. Here's exactly what to do — in order — to give yourself the best chance.
Call 1930 first
Before anything else — even before finishing this page — call 1930 if you've just been scammed. Speed is what lets banks hold the funds.
What to do, in order
- Call 1930 within the first hours
The moment you realise it's a scam, call 1930. If the money is still sitting in the beneficiary account, fast action lets banks place a lien or hold on it. Every hour reduces the chance — this is the most important step.
- Report inside your UPI app and to your bank
Open a dispute in the app you paid from (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, your bank's app) and contact your bank's fraud line in writing. Quote the UTR / transaction ID and the beneficiary UPI ID or account. Ask them to flag the receiving account.
- File at cybercrime.gov.in
File a financial-fraud complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal with all transaction references and screenshots. The portal and 1930 are linked to the banking system for fund-hold requests.
- Keep every reference number
Save the 1930 acknowledgement, the portal complaint number, and your bank's dispute reference together with all screenshots. You'll need them for follow-ups.
Check & report the scammer's UPI ID
Report the UPI ID so others are warned, and get a ready evidence pack for your complaint — free.

Can I get my money back after a UPI scam?
Sometimes — and speed decides it. If you report to 1930 within hours, while the money is still in the beneficiary's account, banks can place a hold. Once it's withdrawn, recovery becomes very hard. There is no guaranteed refund, and anyone promising one for a fee is likely a second scam.
How long do I have to report a UPI fraud?
Report immediately — ideally within hours. The RBI's framework offers stronger protection when unauthorised transactions are reported quickly. For scams where you were tricked into paying, the practical window to hold funds is also very short, so call 1930 at once.
What is the UTR number and why does it matter?
The UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) or transaction ID uniquely identifies your payment. Banks and the cyber portal use it to trace and flag the beneficiary account, so include it in every complaint.
How can I check if a UPI ID belongs to a scammer before paying?
You can check any UPI ID against community scam reports using a free scam-check tool. If others have reported it, you'll see how many times and for what kind of scam — before your money moves.
